How to Select a Network Marketing Company E-ZINE
By DC Falter www.networkmarketingbook.com V1.7
=========================================
Dear Prelaunchinsider.com Reader,
I want to tell you a story that I call “The Agreement”
(the agreement between my wife and me, that is)
After I started to learn how to build a successful network marketing business, I ran into another challenge that you may have faced before as well.
I call this the “network marketing stigma.” Most people have been approached by various home-based business ideas and opportunities over the years and you either love them or you hate them. I was no exception, and I fall into the “love it” category. I was so excited about the idea of leaving full-time employment behind and building my own future in my very own home-based business that I ate, slept, and dreamed home business. I got giddy just thinking about it. However, my wife was the exact opposite, and for good reason. While she was just as excited as I was about our first home business idea, she soon became embittered as I proceeded to max out all of our credit cards with business supplies and product inventory. I was also spending most evenings and weekends giving meetings and presentations. By the time I was ready to make a real commitment to building my home business, my wife was about to put me in the doghouse, and we couldn’t even afford a doghouse. We floundered for
several years in network marketing and spent any money that might have helped us stay ahead of the game.
Facing the Problem
Several things were very obvious in my home-based business career to that point. First, it was obvious that I didn’t understand the criteria for selecting the best company. Second, I didn’t know the most effective and efficient ways to manage and build a home business. And finally, I didn’t know anyone personally who was enjoying tremendous success who was willing to mentor me and teach me the true principles of business success. I was floundering. Every dollar spent on home business product or supplies was wasted. Every business or product presentation I gave was ineffective. As I failed miserably at my sixth attempt to start a home-based network marketing distributorship, I knew that if I wanted to stay married and keep my children sheltered, clothed, and fed, I needed to take a new approach. This time I couldn’t afford failure. At the time, I couldn’t even afford to pay attention.
The Talk
That’s about the time my wife and I had “the talk.” She’s always been supportive of me and she really did believe that I could do anything I committed to, but she finally put her foot down and developed some ground rules. She told me that she knew that I could be successful in building us a home-based business in network marketing. She knew that I had network marketing in my blood and the only thing that would get it out of my blood was embalming fluid. She was doubtful that I’d ever be happy doing anything else. But she finally came up with what I affectionately call “The Ultimatum”. She said something to the effect of, “Honey, I’m going to support you in your attempt to build a home business for us under the following conditions. First, this is your last chance. Number seven had better be your lucky number because I can’t keep going through this. So choose well grasshopper. Second, we’re flat broke, so you’re going to have very little money to invest. You’re going to have t
o keep the spending under control and get the cash flow rolling fast, ‘comprende’? Third, I thought the idea of a home-based business was that you worked from home, not that your files were at home, your family was at home, your computer was at home, but you were never home. I’d like you to work from home as much as possible. No more leaving the house several nights per week to meet with customers and distributors. And finally, I don’t want you to take this personally, but… I don’t want to be involved in any way. This is your business. Build it!”
Wow, I love it when she talks sexy. I think that’s one of the things that attracted me to my wife. She’s a no nonsense kind of woman, and if you’ve hung around me off the clock for any length of time, you’ll know that I’m nothing but nonsense. So we kind of balance each other out.
Anyway, Prelaunchinsider.com Reader, I accepted her terms… in writing… in triplicate. I don’t know where she found the carbon paper but it was obvious that this was premeditated. But, seriously, all “nonsense” aside, I agreed to her wishes and went to work. My first task was to find a company.
Last Chance
Having been given one more chance to make something of myself in life, I decided that I could not afford to make the wrong choice again. As I explained previously, I needed to find three things: the best network marketing company, the best system for building a distributorship with that company, and a mentor who was already successful and who was willing to help me duplicate his or her success. So I immediately put all of my energies into taking the first step; finding the best company. I’ll be writing about the other two topics in the future.
In seeking out the best network marketing business, certain challenges immediately come to mind. Anyone who has ever investigated a lot of different companies could tell you that hype and propaganda are alive and well in the business opportunities industry. I’d like to share a story that relates to this idea. You may have heard this one before, but it’s worth telling again.
Hell has its Charm
A good man died and went to the pearly gates. He met St. Peter there who greeted him by saying, “Sir, I know you’re expecting to go to heaven, but I’ve been instructed that based on new celestial regulations, I must, in all fairness, allow you to view both heaven and hell before allowing you to make your final decision as to where you would like to spend the rest of eternity.” The man said, “Well, I see what heaven looks like, lots of puffy clouds, angelic music, peace and happiness. This would be fine, but I guess if it’s your policy, you might as well show me hell.” So St. Peter took him into an elevator and they both plunged down to the depths of hell. Finally, the elevator opened into a banquet room filled with live music, dancing, delicious foods and drinks of every kind, and thousands of charming and sophisticated people welcoming him. He says, “Wow, I never expected it to be like this!!” They got back into the elevator and the doors closed. Then St. Peter rounded on th
e man and said, “Well, have you made your choice?” The man replied firmly, “You know, the white fluffy clouds, angelic music, and peace and happiness stuff was great, but I have to say… I really, really liked that Hell place. If I have to make a choice now, I’d really prefer to go to Hell.” St. Peter looked at him with skepticism, and said, “Is that your final answer? Alrighty then. As you wish!” Instantly St. Peter snapped his finger and disappeared. The elevator opened again at the bottom floor. The man stepped out, and the elevator closed behind him. Suddenly the room became dark, all of the food, dancing, and music dissipated and was replaced by evil pipe organ music. The room’s temperature instantly climbed 30 degrees and it started hailing fire and brimstone. Hooded guards flooded the room with chains and shackles to bind the ankles of all the partygoers. The atmosphere had become gloomy and hopeless. A demon approached the man with a pitchfork to force him into line
with the others. The man spoke up and asked the demon, “I don’t understand, just a few minutes ago I saw a banquet room filled with music, dancing, food, and fun. What’s all this.” The demon laughed heartily and relied, “Oh, you must have visited during our twice weekly Hell Opportunity Meeting. It’s back to business as usual.”
Prelaunchinsider.com Reader, the first time I heard this story, I fell off my chair laughing. Anyone who has been through the experience of trying to evaluate a home-based business venture by attending an opportunity meeting can relate to this. All they want to show you is “all of the good, and none of the bad.” In other words, it’s a completely unrealistic look at what the company was really like. But it can take new distributors as much as six months to figure out whether or not that initial opportunity meeting was truly accurate or not. I must admit that I was suckered into many different opportunities with this kind of hype and fluff only to feel my dream slipping away from me at the end of approximately six months. The song and dance was replaced with frustration and regret, not to mention wasted time, effort and money. Without some kind of objective, and highly professional system for eliminating the flimsy programs and focusing on the winning opportunities, one could spend a lifetime boun
cing from company to company trying to find something of lasting value and creating a truly hellish business.
Enough Is Enough
Right about the time my wife and I were trapped in our government jobs with bills to pay and no prospects of breaking free, I decided enough was enough. I was fed up. I knew I could be successful in a home business because I was surrounded by people younger, and less experienced than me earning hundreds of thousands of dollars per year and more. Yet, I couldn’t find a decent company to work with that matched my abilities and my values. I decided that if I was going to be successful in home-based business, I had to select the best home-based business. And if I was going to select the best home-based business, I was going to have to review every home business available and then make an objective decision based on the facts. No more opportunity meetings. No more hype. I knew that if I was going to truly be successful, that I had to look at every opportunity from the inside out. So that’s exactly what I did.
Homework
Over the better part of a year, I dedicated myself to searching the world over for information on every available home-based business opportunity. I found lists and lists of distributorships, franchises, network-marketing companies, home-party plan programs, and internet-based affiliate programs. I wrote hundreds of letters requesting detailed information. I sent emails, faxes, and made hundreds of phone calls to the founders of every kind of business concept imaginable. And then, the responses started pouring in.
At the time I was borrowing some space in my parents’ basement to run my research office. Luckily I was able to intercept the mail every day before my mother saw her oversized mailbox filled to capacity with company literature, audios and videos, distributor kits, product samples, and who knows what else. I began filling large boxes and storing these materials under my father’s 4 large drafting tables, in the closet under the stairs (move over Harry Potter), and in other storage locations throughout the house. It took me most of the year to go through all of the material carefully and gather the data for my home business study.
Research and Evaluation
By the end of 1995, I had compiled a list of over 200 top home-based business programs on which I had files full of substantial facts and figures. Using a list of six key criteria and about fifty sub-criteria I had developed over the year, I started scrutinizing and eliminating companies from my consideration.
Soon I had narrowed this list of 200 down to a list of 50 popular programs. These finalists had to be in business for at least 2-3 years and they had to have a positive track record. From these 50, I chose my top 20, then my top 10, and then I narrowed it to only 5 companies. I can honestly say in retrospect that I could have chosen any of these final 5 programs because not only were they good choices then, but they’re all still in business today and thriving in the marketplace. Yes, my study really works!
When the dust settled, I selected one of these top 5 programs and the rest is history. For the first time in my career, I launched a successful business that took me to a solid income that provided financial security for my family for years. This income and the time freedom provided by my network marketing company allowed me to publish the first version of this book in 1998 as a soft cover. I sold over 40,000 copies of my book without the help of a single publisher or bookstore. I stopped actively building my network marketing distributorship 1998 and started researching, consulting, and training. I also spent a lot of time on the Internet learning what it was and how it worked.
I actively participated in building this business from 1995 to 1998 and then I took my business in a different direction. My success in this one company propelled me into a career of training, speaking, and consulting. I had the opportunity to travel all over the country and world, sharing my network marketing knowledge with the founders of multi-hundred million dollar companies. I also worked with aspiring network marketing pros of every creed and nationality. My research and writings threw the door of opportunity open wide and allowed me to experience an extraordinary life of discovery and fulfillment.
Even though I took a break from active participation in my network marketing business, based on the residual nature of network marketing commissions, today I still receive a weekly income from the efforts I put forth over a decade ago. This is one of the key messages I want to get across in this book. Are you ready? Here it is. If you select the right company; you could work hard for a few years and generate income for the rest of your life! I did it. And if a college dropout working as a receptionist can do it, what are you capable of?
