In 1519, the Spanish explorer Hernan Cortez sailed his fleet of 11 ships into the Harbor of Veracruz, Mexico. It was common practice in those days to leave guards with the ships, as they might be needed to later return to the Old World for supplies or, if necessary, to retreat from the enemy. But Cortez came for victory. He didn’t care about having options. He didn’t want his soldiers to have any doubt about their mission, so he gave the orders to burn the ships. Cortez ensured that conquest was the only means of survival for all of his men by providing no possibility of retreat. Failure was not an option.
I knew that if I wanted to be successful in my business, I had to start burning my ships, and maybe even a few bridges. I remember people telling me, “even if you think you want to build a business instead of finish a degree, you should get your degree so you have something to fall back on.” My feeling was, if I have any way of escaping from my problems when business building gets tough, I’ll likely “fall back.” Though it seemed foolish to many of my associates at the time (and probably still does) I feel it was one of those moments of truth. Again, it wasn’t the act of leaving school that was significant; it was the act of total commitment to my purpose, and the shedding of all excuses for failure.
