How to Select a Network Marketing Company Series

Becoming Marketplace Sensitive

By Daren C. Falter

Starting with a clear mind

From my experience in coaching others, choosing a company for emotional reasons will lead to disaster. It’s like trying to force a square peg into a round hole. You must clear your mind of all ideas, ventures, or schemes. My job is to help you realize that existing companies, products, and programs you may know nothing about may be very lucrative alternatives to the struggle you’re experiencing now.

My job is to get you to identify viable markets on your own, and then you can find a premium product to match that market. Then you can find a highly experienced, high integrity company that supplies such a product. Many people try to take a product they like and force it into the marketplace against its will. Instead, start paying attention to the mass marketplace while at the same time identifying powerful market niches. If you pay attention to the principles taught in this article, you’ll be on your way to selecting a winning business model every time.

Becoming Aware of Your Marketplace

One of the greatest secrets to becoming a master marketer is to learn how to pay attention to the marketplace. To do this, we need to become aware of our surroundings and pay attention to the subtle clues that others are overlooking. I have a friend who attends my local church who is a Green Beret. He offered to teach my family and a few others in our church a course on home and personal defense. One of the strategies we learned for identifying a threatening individual was not to look at his face or listen to his speech, but to focus on the person’s hands. Most perpetrators are con artists. Our coach explained that if a threatening individual wants to lull you into a sense of security, he might make non-threatening gestures with his face, eyes, and voice while reaching for a weapon. Our instructor gave the class the assignment of watching people’s hands while out in public. At first I had a hard time remembering to do it, but with a little practice I’m now much more aware of what people are doing with their hands while I’m on an elevator, in a parking garage, or walking in the park. I can detect a dangerous situation seconds before others around me, even when the face of a potential perpetrator may be giving a completely different message. These seconds count when it comes to personal safety, and they also count in the marketplace. Knowing what to look for and what to ignore in the marketplace can make all the difference in identifying rising markets.

Here’s another example of awareness that everyone can relate to. Have you ever bought a new car, and before you purchased that car you never really noticed others like it, but afterwards you started seeing them everywhere? It’s like this for everyone. It’s not that cars identical to yours weren’t there before; they were. You just didn’t notice them because you were unaware. Learning to be aware of the marketplace around you and learning how to pick up on the wants and needs of people is a skill that you must practice. This new awareness will lead you to make the correct choices in selecting the most lucrative home-based business ideas and products. Start paying attention to all of the messages people are sending out to the marketplace and you’ll begin to understand how master marketers think and act.

For starters, you can pay close attention to news, current events, and even commercial advertisements and promotions. Next, you can subscribe to some of the most informative business journals and periodicals such as the Wall Street Journal, Entrepreneur Magazine, Newsweek, The Economist, USA Today, and other national publications. I also love some of the more progressive information magazines such as Fast Company, Wired, Business 2.0, and Selling Power. I also like to check out Oprah Magazine to see what’s happening in her world.

Next, you can read or browse all for the trade journals related to home business and network marketing such as: The Network Marketing Business Journal, Network Marketing Insider, Small Business Opportunities (and related magazines), Home Business Magazine, Home Business Connection, Home Business Advertiser, and any others related to this field. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t actually read all of these cover to cover every month, but I do browse many of them on a regular basis. Its also a great idea to search for anything you might have an interest in on  www.google.com. Find out about everything and anything. Ask questions and seek answers. Pay attention to the messages and conversations around you and you’ll start developing a type of sixth sense. This intuition will start pointing you to opportunities that you didn’t see before.

Be sure to attend any seminar, webinar, teleclass, or online chat that will give me information on my industry, on the marketplace, or on marketing on or off the Web. Not only have I gained a substantial amount of information and insights be becoming a seminar junkie, but I’ve created and cultivated some of my most profitable relationships here.

Finally, you must read, read, read. I try to pound through a book a week. Sometimes I get through two in a week, and sometimes I don’t read a single page. But I strive to read for at least 20 minutes or more daily. Most of my reading is through books on tape. Turn your car into a rolling University as you listen to and re-listen to the most powerful books in the world. If you would like a list of my recommendations, visit me at www.networkmarketingbook.com.

Pour information onto your brain without ceasing. Even if you find that your brain can not hold any more, trust me when I say, you’re getting something, especially when you repeat the same or similar information. If you’re going to gluttonous about anything in your life, make it about feeding your mind. Ideas and inspiration will flow only from a full vessel.

Seeking Mentorship

Don’t forget to ask for help. You’ll waste a lot of time, energy, and money if you don’t. Let’s say you’re an amateur stock market investor, and you want make the right choices with your money. Wouldn’t you want to hire an investment coach who could teach you how to earn the best returns on your investments? What if the advice your coach gave you was so good that you immediately started earning large amounts of dividends, interest, or equity on all of your investments? Would this coach be worth keeping? Would you want to listen to an investment coach who did not invest in the same stocks that he or she was advising you to invest in?

What if you had the opportunity to be coached by Warren Buffet, considered by many to be the world’s greatest investor? Would you take his advice? Would you trust his counsel? Now, wouldn’t it be nice if you could hire a consultant to help you select the best home-based business model? Would you feel more confident if you could have all of your decisions reviewed by someone with over a decade of experience? Well, Warren Buffet does not have the time to consult the masses on how to invest wisely, and most home-based business consultants, like me, also have limited time to counsel aspiring home-based business owners on how to pick a winning opportunity. So I’ve taken very special care to make sure that I cover everything you will need to know in order to do your own opportunity evaluations and chose your next home business with confidence. You won’t need Warren Buffet after all.
