Yoli Founder Daren Falter Story “Last Chance In MLM.”
Daren’s Last Chance For MLM Success!
By Daren C. Falter, Author of How to Select a Network Marketing Company
Last chance
Having been given one more chance to make something of myself in life, I decided that I could not afford to make the wrong choice again. As I explained previously, I needed to find three things: the best network marketing company, the best system for building a distributorship with that company, and a mentor who was already successful and who was willing to help me duplicate his or her success. So I immediately put all of my energies into taking the first step: finding the best company. I’ll be writing about the other two topics in future books and articles.
In seeking out the best network marketing business, certain challenges immediately come to mind. Anyone who has ever investigated a lot of different companies could tell you that hype and propaganda are alive and well in the business opportunities industry. I’d like to share a story that relates to this idea. You may have heard this one before, but it’s worth telling again.
Hell has its charm
A good man died and went to the pearly gates. There he met St. Peter, who greeted him by saying, “Sir, I know you’re expecting to go to heaven, but based on new celestial regulations, I must, in all fairness, allow you to view both heaven and hell before allowing you to make your final decision as to where you would like to spend the rest of eternity.”
The man said, “Well, I see what heaven looks like: lots of puffy clouds, angelic music, peace, and happiness. This would be fine, but I guess if it’s your policy, you might as well show me hell.”
So St. Peter took him into an elevator, and they both plunged down to the depths of hell. Finally, the elevator opened into a banquet room filled with live music, dancing, delicious food and drinks of every kind, and thousands of charming and sophisticated people welcoming him. He said, “Wow, I never expected it to be like this!”
They got back into the elevator and the doors closed. Then St. Peter rounded and said, “Well, have you made your choice?”
The man replied firmly, “You know, the fluffy white clouds, angelic music, and peace and happiness stuff was great, but I have to say, I really, really liked that hell place. If I have to make a choice now, I’d really prefer to go to hell.”
St. Peter looked at him with skepticism, and said, “Is that your final answer? Alrighty then. As you wish!” Instantly St. Peter snapped his finger and disappeared. The elevator opened again at the bottom floor. The man stepped out, and the elevator closed behind him. Suddenly the room became dark. All of the food, dancing, and music dissipated and was replaced by evil pipe organ music. The room’s temperature instantly climbed thirty degrees and it started hailing fire and brimstone. Hooded guards flooded the room with chains and shackles to bind the ankles of all the partygoers. The atmosphere had become gloomy and hopeless.
A demon approached the man with a pitchfork to force him into line with the others. The man spoke up and asked the demon, “I don’t understand. Just a few minutes ago, I saw a banquet room filled with music, dancing, food, and fun. What’s all this?”
The demon laughed heartily and relied, “Oh, you must have visited during our twice- weekly Hell Opportunity Meeting. It’s back to business as usual.”
The first time I heard this story, I fell off my chair laughing. Anyone who has been through the experience of trying to evaluate a home-based business venture by attending an opportunity meeting can relate to this. All they want to show you is “all of the good, and none of the bad.” In other words, it’s a completely unrealistic look at what the company is really like. It can take new distributors as long as six months to figure out whether or not that initial opportunity meeting was truly accurate or not. I must admit that I was suckered into many different opportunities with this kind of hype and fluff, only to feel my dream slipping away from me after a few months. The song and dance was replaced with frustration and regret, not to mention wasted time, effort, and money. Without some kind of objective and highly professional system for eliminating the flimsy programs and focusing on the winning opportunities, one could spend a lifetime bouncing from company to company, trying to find something of lasting value and creating a truly hellish business.
Picking the best
I decided that if I was going to be successful in home-based business, I had to select the best home-based business. And if I was going to select the best home-based business, I was going to have to review every home business available and then make an objective decision based on the facts. No more opportunity meetings. No more hype. I knew that if I was going to truly be successful, I had to look at every opportunity from the inside out. So that’s exactly what I did.
Homework
Over the better part of a year, I dedicated myself to searching the world over for information on every available home-based business opportunity. I found lists and lists of distributorships, franchises, network marketing companies, home-party plan programs, and Internet-based affiliate programs. I wrote hundreds of letters requesting detailed information. I sent e-mails and faxes, and made hundreds of phone calls to the founders of every kind of business concept imaginable. And then the responses started pouring in.
At the time, I was borrowing some space in my parents’ basement to run my research office. Luckily, I was able to intercept the mail every day before my mother saw her oversized mailbox filled to capacity with company literature, videos, distributor kits, product samples, and who knows what else. I began filling large boxes and storing these materials under my father’s four large drafting tables, in the closet under the stairs (move over Harry Potter), and in other storage locations throughout the house. It took me most of the year to go through all of the material carefully and gather the data for my home business study.
Research and Evaluation
In 1994, during the time I was gathering information on all of the companies in direct sales and network marketing, I was also reading every book on the subject, interviewing consultants and top distributors, and attending as many MLM seminars as I could afford. By the end of 1995, not only had a developed a solid understanding of what it takes to build a successful business in network marketing, but I had compiled a list of over one thousand MLM company names. Later, in Chapter Three, I’ll explain the six criteria I used to eliminate companies from my consideration. As I started using these six key criteria, I was successful in narrowing this list of over one thousand down to no more than two hundred of the top home-based business programs. Still too many companies to consider, I began applying the six criteria to eliminate more companies and continue to narrow this list down to include only the best of the best.
Using mainly the second of the Six Keys (selecting the best product industry), soon I had narrowed this list down to just fifty popular programs. These finalists had to be in business for at least two to three years, and they had to have a stellar track record. Later in Chapter Nine, we will go into great detail on how to examine the track records and backgrounds of the company and its founders.
From these fifty, I chose my top twenty, then my top ten, and then I narrowed it to only five companies. I accomplished this by applying the last four of the six success criteria explained at the beginning of Chapter Three. I can honestly say that I could have chosen any of the final five programs, because not only were they good choices then, but they’re all still in business today and thriving in the marketplace. Yes, my study really works!
When the dust settled, I selected one of these top five programs, and the rest is history. For the first time in my career, I launched a successful business and earned a solid income that provided financial security for my family for years. This income and the time freedom provided by my network marketing distributorship allowed me to publish the first version of my book in 1998. I sold over 40,000 copies of my book without the help of a single publisher or bookstore. Realizing I could help more people by researching, training and consulting outside of my current company, I stopped actively building my network marketing distributorship in 1998. During this time, I also spent a lot of time on the Internet, learning how to build a network marketing businesses using the Web. Incidentally, because of the purchasing activity of my customers and distributors, I still earn weekly income from the network marketing company I selected in 1995 using the criteria outlined in this book and my articles.
Because of my success in selecting a top network marketing company and building it for a few years to a substantial income, I had the opportunity to travel all over the world, sharing my network marketing knowledge with the founders and distributors of multi-million dollar companies. I also worked with aspiring network marketing pros of every creed and nationality. My research and writings threw the door of opportunity wide open and allowed me to experience an extraordinary life of discovery and fulfillment.
Even though I took a break from active participation as a network marketing distributor, based on the residual nature of network marketing commissions, today I still receive a weekly income from the efforts I put forth over a decade ago. This is one of the key messages I want to get across in this book. Are you ready? Here it is. If you select the right company, you could work hard for a few years and generate income for the rest of your life! I did it. And if a college dropout working as a receptionist can do it, imagine what you’re capable of.
